I am a Technical Consultant. Part of my role consists of customer contact, so collecting information from the customer and thinking about what needs to be built. I think along with the customer about what they want from a technical point of view, whether that fits in with the problem they want to solve, and what we can do in this regard. The other part of the time I am building software. This is not about the application itself, because that is what Development does, but actually all customer wishes on top of that. This concerns, for example, collective labor agreement rules, customer-specific rules and links with other systems.
Our technical team consists of a product team and two customer teams. I am also the coordinator of one of the customer teams. I take care of the planning, so that everyone knows what to do, and for which customer.
And what does an average working week look like for you?
I have a few regular things in my working week. Most days we start the day with a stand up with the team, discussing what we are going to do and what we are up against. I also have a few regular meetings with customers, for example on Thursday mornings always with the same customer.
Furthermore, every week is a little different. Sometimes I have more meetings with customers, then more internal meetings, and sometimes there are weeks when I am programming more myself and working behind my laptop. I work about 50/50 at home and at the office, I really like that variety.
About once a month I go to a customer, often before the start of an implementation. Then we do a technical scan and go through what needs to be done technically for the customer. Sometimes a link has to be made or they have exceptions to the collective labor agreement. Then we can provide customization where necessary.
How did you actually end up here?
I already knew Astrid (Technical Consultant) through my studies and saw that she worked at Intus, so I sent her a message.
Later I had a chat with Ellen (Account Manager) and Hans (CEO) at a trade fair, and I made an appointment to come by for a talk.
What do you like most about your job?
I really like the combination of programming myself and customer contact. For a while I was half Technical Consultant and half Developer. But what I missed in development, for example, is precisely that customer contact. I also really like programming, so the combination is really ideal for me.
What do you particularly like about working at Intus? You have been working here for 6 years already!
I especially like the colleagues at Intus, and the open atmosphere we have here. That is very important to me. You can always walk into anyone, everyone is always there for you. Of course it is important that the work is fun, but for me it is also very important that I just feel at home in a company and have nice contact with colleagues. Because then work is not just work, but also fun.
And what have you learned in those 6 years?
Almost everything I do now! At university I learned the basics of programming, but nothing more. You also develop your analytical thinking skills there, which you really need in this work. At my previous job and at Intus I really mastered programming. On the other hand, the whole part of customer contact and designing together with the customer what needs to be built, that was really new to me when I came to work here. I have made a great step in these recent years.
