Meet our people

Derek Read

Hi Derek, What exactly is your role at Intus?

I’m an account manager. That means I have a lot of contact with our clients and make sure they are well supported. Together with our Customer Success Manager, I look at how they can use our system in the best possible way.

I’ve been working here since April 2021, so I’ve been doing this job for just over two years now. What I like about my role is that I am a link between the client and our company. I help the client move forward but also think along with Intus. That middle position suits me well.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

When I was young, I wanted to be a detective. That was around when I was eight or nine years old. Later on, I wasn’t really sure. After finishing secondary education (VWO), I considered studying economics at university, but that didn’t suit me. It was too theoretical.

Then I switched to a Bachelor’s in Commercial Economics (HBO). That felt a bit like the ‘safe’ choice at HBO: if you don’t know what to choose, you pick that. I have always enjoyed working with people and helping them. A supporting role, between the client and the organization, fits me well. I now feel comfortable in my role and with the team.

How would you describe your team in three words, and why?

Professional, fun, involved, and top collaboration. That’s more than three, but they all capture it well. We’re currently five people, we’ve recently expanded. That was necessary because at one point I had 28 clients, which was too many. Since then, colleagues have joined, but I already see client numbers rising again. I expect we’ll need another person, especially if sales continue to go well. So growth is definitely happening.

What do you like most about working at Intus?

What I really appreciate internally is how approachable everyone is. You can easily drop by each other’s desks, and colleagues are genuinely willing to help each other. This creates an open and pleasant atmosphere. Hands-on, professional, and collegial. When the internal culture is good, the external results follow, that’s how I experience it. I really feel at home here.

There are also regular fun activities organized. For example, I’ve joined the pub quiz three times already, and sometimes after a trade fair or team outing we go out to eat together. I find that really valuable. Last year we went curling, never thought I would do that, but it was a lot of fun. I try to join as many things as possible. It’s not just the big events that make it fun. Small things, like a healthy lunch or a ‘Fatty Friday,’ also create a nice vibe.

What have you learned since working here?

I already had quite some experience in account management, but I’ve learned a lot about project management here. My colleagues work a lot with implementations and projects, and I’ve picked up a lot from that. I’ve also learned a lot technically, mainly because I’m curious and want to understand how things work.

What makes you proud of what you do?

I’m not someone who easily says they’re proud, but what I do find important is the balance between the client and the organization. Sometimes, as an account manager, you’re right in the middle. I find it rewarding when I’m able to defuse a tense situation, have a good conversation, and represent both sides. That doesn’t always work, but I think I’m good at it.
