Meet our people

Thymen van Scheppingen

Hi Thymen,

what exactly do you do for work, and what do you like most about it?

I’m a software tester in the mobile app team. The best part is that, as a tester, you’re the last one to check something before it goes to the customer. That responsibility appeals to me because you really have to think from the user’s perspective. What does that person see? What feels logical? You try to find mistakes before anyone else encounters them.

Besides that, you have to be very critical, even about the smallest things. For example: is a button neatly aligned, does everything work as you expect? That eye for detail suits me. And actually, it’s quite a social job. You have a lot of contact with developers. If something doesn’t work properly, you have to explain it clearly. That’s interesting to me: how do you communicate such a message so that the other person understands and can fix it?

How did you end up at Intus?

I did an internship here with two fellow students. We built a chatbot. What struck me immediately was that we were really taken seriously. We got to present our work in meetings and received good feedback. That made an impression.

Now I’ve been working here for eight months, and from day one I had that same feeling. You’re seen as a full colleague. You join right away, get responsibility, but you’re not just thrown into the deep end. That balance is nice.

The onboarding you get is also very pleasant. You get a buddy who helps you get started, and meanwhile you gradually learn to do more on your own. That way you naturally grow into the role.

Who do you often work with, and how is that collaboration?

Mainly with the app team: the programmers and the UX designer. I test their work, so we consult a lot. We also have a weekly test meeting with all testers. We share what’s going on or what issues we’re facing. Sometimes there’s a longer session where we really dive deep or share knowledge.

What makes you proud of your work?

When I find a bug that no one else has seen and it gets fixed, that’s really satisfying. Sometimes you have to search a long time to find out exactly what’s going wrong. And when you manage to reproduce it well and explain it to your colleagues, that’s a great moment.

You really have to be critical and curious, especially when you think you’re done but still take an extra ten minutes. It’s precisely at that moment that I often find errors. That extra check is really worth its weight in gold.

What is a memorable moment from your time here?

Just before a big app release, I organized a kind of test afternoon. A mini-hackathon with colleagues from different departments. I came up with small tasks to walk through the app. Super fun and very useful. We found some last bugs before going live.

What’s typical Intus?

Lunch! We have lunch together every day, or go for a walk outside. And there are regularly fun events, like the Easter lunch. And everyone takes their work seriously, especially the quality of what we deliver. It can take a bit longer, as long as it’s really good.
